Katopaphos

Katopaphos is an ancient city, initially Greek then Roman.
There are not really any buildings left but it has an amazing collection of Mosaics
This mosiac is named 'Theseus and the Minotaur'

A close up of 'Theseus and the Minotaur'
King Minos of Knossos, Crete forced the Athenians to send hostages each year for the Minotaur, a half man, half bull monster living in the Labyrinth. Theseus travels to Crete and kills the Minotaur to set free the hostages

This is the 'first bath of Achilles'  A slightly different take on the myth of Achilles.
According to the myth, Achilles mother was a Goddess who bathed him in the river Styx to give him miracle protection from all wounds
However she held him by his ankle which remained vulnerable !

This is one of few structures remaining at katopaphos

These mosaics are from the House of Aion. The mosaics here are said to have very fine workmanship

Also from the House of Aion, this is Ganymede and the Eagle.
Ganymede was considered the most beatiful of all mortals and is being carried off by the Eagle to Olympus to serve the Gods.
